Department of Sanskrit started its UG Programme in 1957. T K Ramachandran Ayer, (author of a Short History of Sanskrit Literature, Compartive Philosophy, and many other works) Sri. R balakrishnan Nair, Sri C S Poornamodan ,Dr Svarnalatha, Dr. P K Madhavan (Panditaratnam),Dr Swaminathan,Dr. P M Abdul Rahman etc. have served as the department heads and led us from front so far.
We offer B.A. Sanskrit Programme, Complementary course for B.A. and M.A. Malayalam, Common course for all B.A./ B.Sc/B.Com and open course for all other disciplines. The courses offered by the department are aimed at introducing the technical nuances of the subjects like Indian Philosophical traditions, Vyakarana, Literature and Literary Criticism, Arthasastra & Dharmasastra, Veda, Upanishad, as well as Scientific literature in Sanskrit and inculcating an academic perspective in students. Also expected to enable students to use digital and functional knowledge in the field of informatics. Department also offers elective course Malayalam writers on Sanskrit and Open course for the students of other streams.
The department has a library which contains 4500 books of different categories.
In order to maintain the better teacher student relationship the tutorial system has been created. To rectify the learning difficulties of students Remedial classes are also designed.
