About the Department

The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1957. It was one of the oldest Statistics Departments in the state. The department offers full time postgraduate course in Statistics and complementary courses for various disciplines like Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Psychology and Zoology. Several of its alumni were placed in prestigious government services like Indian Statistical Service(ISS) as well as in private sectors. The department provides consultancy services in Statistical software training, statistical data analysis and clarification of statistical concepts. The Department helps students acquire the conceptual, computational, and mathematical tools for quantifying uncertainty and making sense of complex data arising from many applications.

The department is actively engaged in academic activities by conducting National and International Seminars/Workshops, talks in interdisciplinary topics, and organizing state level competitions for graduate students. Motivated by the high demand in the field of teaching and research in the subject, many of the students opt for higher studies leading to research degrees in various institutions. The Department also provides avenues for interacting with eminent theoretical and applied statisticians across the country. Throughout the journey, the department was successful in the value addition of students in transforming them to the knowledge assets of the society.
