The Post Graduate department of English was established in 1957 and is one of the oldest departments in English in the state. The department that had offered both PG and UG courses in English from its inception became a Research Centre focusing on Language, Literature and Cultural Studies in 2017. Only very few affiliated colleges under Calicut University are offering PG program in English. 

In 2018, under the sponsorship of the Directorate of Collegiate Education, the department embarked on a project to fulfill the criterion of Center of Excellence in Higher Education.  As part of this, the Post Graduate Department of English and Research Centre proposed to function as an interdisciplinary platform for research activities in humanities and cultural studies and accommodate research initiatives of other departments of language and humanities both within and outside the college.

In this connection, the department took up several research initiatives in socially and culturally relevant domains like gender, caste, ethnicity, indigenity, marginality, media representation, digitality, materiality, identity politics, nationalism, popular culture and multiculturalism by hosting Lecture Series, Research Forums, Seminars and Publications.
