Department of Zoology

Laboratory Facilities

The Department of Zoology has a BSc core/ complementary laboratory, labs for Master program and a well equipped research laboratory. The BSc Zoology laboratory is equipped with self illuminating student microscopes, Dissection microscopes, Microbial hood, Double distillation unit and all other necessary infrastructure facilities to conduct practical classes to UG students.

The Masters program offered by the department is with a specialisation in Entomology and the PG laboratory has a good insect repository and biochemistry lab facility for the conduct of MSc Zoology practicals. The masters lab also has high resolution compound microscopes, bacteriological hoods, incubators, waterbaths , laboratory microtomes, calorimeter, microtome etc to support practical classes.

Museum

The Department of Zoology is one of the centers of excellence in Biological sciences, enriched with a very good museum with more than one thousand rare preserved specimens of all the phylum and osteological specimens of Human, Horse, Cow, Dog, Snakes, Birds and also that of aquatic forms including dolphin, crocodile, bones of whale etc. . The museum is a rich repository for students and researchers to familiarize features of different rare and wild forms. The department also own an entomology repository with hundreds of preserved insect specimens representing all insect orders which serve as a rich resource for researchers in Zoology, especially Entomology.

Research Lab

The department was approved as a recognized research Centre in 1998 under the University of Calicut and active research is going on under various fields of animal science. The department own a good research laboratory facility with research facilities to conduct experiments on Molecular biology, genomics, Biochemistry and Microbiology with sophisticated equipment like PCR, Blotting apparatus, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Fluorimeter, CO2 Incubator, Gel Documentation system, Trans-illuminator, milli Q water system, Vertical and Horizontal gel electrophoretic apparatus, Hematology analyser, Biosafety cabinet, Laminar air flow systems, -20 Freezer, Cooling centrifuge, Ice making machine etc.

An animal cell culture laboratory is also under development. The research lab and the instrument facilities are also open to all research scholars outside the college on a conditional basis. The department offers research services on Microbial, Entomological and Toxicological aspects to the scientific community of Palakkad.
