The Department of Zoology, one of the first departments established at Govt.Victoria College, Palakkad had its genesis as a subsidiary subject for BSc Degree Examination in 1939.  The department has made its identity in the frontier areas of Life Sciences and now it has developed into a full- fledged Centre of teaching and research in modern biology offering B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Zoology, affiliated to the University of Calicut . The Mission of   the Department of Zoology is to full fill the inquisitiveness of students in areas of Zoology and its allied subjects by giving exposure to cutting edge knowledge and experiences in practical aspects thereby contributing to personal development and service to society. Presently, the department is enriched with a full – fledged Research Laboratory, equipped with necessary scientific instruments to perform cutting edge research in the fields of molecular biology, Genomics, Microbiology and Biochemistry. The department of Zoology is one of the centers of excellence in Biological sciences, with modernized laboratory for insect taxonomy and enriched with a very good museum with more than one thousand rare preserved specimens and members of the faculty are actively involved in research pursuits and the research outcomes are published in national & international journals.
